MAKATON – The Makaton language and communication system in Canada
DistinctAbility are so pleased to be Partnering with The Makaton Charity to introduce the Makaton communication and language system to Canada. On 1st April 2019 we signed an exclusive Partnership Agreement to effectively become “Makaton Canada”, responsible for the strategic development and establishment of the language across the country. The impact of this on employment practices but also in terms of the wider social impact will be significant.
In the UK and France, and in other international regions upwards of 1,000,000 people now speak and communicate using the Makaton process. It’s beauty and strength lies in the fact that it can easily be used and learned in it’s basic form, and as such can be a transformational tool both socially and for employment opportunities.
Imagine if a working Team could suddenly “talk” with a colleague who had communication challenges, how would everyone feel !? Think of the opportunities for non-verbal people who are simply excluded and overlooked but who have great skills and talents?
Makaton is a 30 year established language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order. Importantly with Makaton, individuals can learn and communicate incredibly quickly away using the signs and symbols, so the rigour, discipline and time needed with traditional Signing is not there.
For those who have experienced the frustration of not being always able to communicate well, Makaton can be a life changer. Makaton takes away that frustration and enables individuals to connect so much more effectively with other people, with colleagues and the world around them. This opens up all kinds of possibilities.
At DistinctAbility we believe that the introduction of the basics of Makaton to service providers and employers can significantly increase opportunities for persons with communication challenges and non-verbal individuals, and hugely enhance communication and assimilation in the workplace.
Makaton features heavily at our Disruptive Event in April and our first Train the Trainer Programmes with the Team from the UK will take place in early May.
At Distinctability we are so pleased to be bringing this process and language to Canada and are excited at the prospects it brings to Society as a whole, to the care, education, domestic and of course workplace environments.
See Steve Hall discuss it on BBC News in the context of it’s use with children.
